You know what frosts my flakes?
Apps that insist on updating at the worst possible moment.
We’re told there’s an app for everything these days. Unfortunately, there is.
I hate apps, yet somehow I’ve accumulated more than 120 of them on my phone alone, not counting my tablet and laptop.
I’ve even turned on automatic updates.
So, why do some apps refuse to update until I’m standing at the checkout counter with a line of impatient people behind me?
The cashier says, “Just scan your rewards app.”
I open it and see the message, “This app must be updated.”
Seriously? Now? We can’t complete the immediate transaction and then do the update while I walk away?
Meanwhile, Google and Samsung send me almost daily notifications bragging that my apps have been automatically updated.
Apparently, they meant every app except the ones I actually need.
And while we’re at it, why does every update log me out of my account? If the app knows who I am before the update, why does it suddenly develop amnesia afterward?
What should be a 30-second transaction turns into a five-minute production while I update the app, wait for it to install, look up my password, retrieve the verification code and log back in.
By the time I’m finished, the frozen food has thawed or the hot food is frozen, and everyone behind me is wondering if they should switch checkout lanes.
I’m Grandpa Grumpy, and I’m beginning to think the smartest thing about my smartphone is knowing exactly when to act stupid.
