I wonder how we can have computers that drive cars and create artificial intelligence, yet a gas pump apparently needs a full minute to dispense the final few cents of gasoline.

Maybe it’s time for a technological breakthrough: a gas pump that simply stops at exactly $20.

Employers keep complaining they can't find dependable workers. Maybe the problem isn't a shortage of good workers. Maybe their computers keep rejecting them.

For many people over 50, getting a part-time job today means getting past online applications, automated screening systems and algorithms that may overlook decades of valuable life and work experience.

Perhaps employers might want to stop relying so heavily on robots and start looking at the actual people applying for their jobs.

Why does my refrigerator need Wi-Fi? Why does my oven need an app? And why should my toaster ever need a software update?

Internet-connected "smart" appliances are supposed to make life easier, but they also create entirely new ways for things to go spectacularly wrong.

Just ask the military commissaries where internet-connected freezers at 18 establishments around the world recently went into extended defrost mode and tons of frozen food reportedly had to be discarded.

I wonder whether we're really making our appliances smarter or just making simple things unnecessarily complicated.

Because my refrigerator has only one job: Keep the food cold!

When did a soda REFILL become a luxury purchase?

I bring my own 52-ounce cup. I fill it with ice. I dispense the soda myself. Yet convenience stores are charging me as much as $1.96 for some syrup, carbonated water and ice.

Even stranger, every chain seems to have different rules. QuikTrip just raised its price, Circle K seems to make up the price as it goes, Love's cares what my cup is made out of, and Buc-ee's has its own definition of "washable."

So I looked into what fountain soda actually costs. Suddenly, those refill prices became even harder to swallow.

I'm Grandpa Grumpy, and I'm starting to think the most expensive ingredient in a fountain drink isn't the syrup. It's the word "convenience."

Christmas decorations in SEPTEMBER?

I walked into Sam’s Club yesterday and found rows of Christmas decorations for sale a full 114 days before Christmas. We hadn’t even made it to Labor Day!

Retailers have a strange habit of putting seasonal merchandise on the shelves months before anyone needs it, then getting rid of it just when the season actually arrives. I saw the same thing with snow shovels in Wisconsin.

So why are we shopping for Christmas decorations nearly four months early? Are people in the holiday mood or just avoiding Halloween?

America spends billions of dollars maintaining national parks, forests and other public lands for all of us to enjoy. So why are so many of them practically empty?

I wonder why people will pay big bucks to squeeze into crowded campgrounds when beautiful public lands, quiet campsites and peaceful recreation areas are often sitting unused just down the road.
