The hassle of watching digital videos

I’ve bought hundreds of digital movies, so someone explain why I’m still sitting through ads like I’m watching basic cable.

You know what really frosts my flakes? Digital movies.

You search for a movie by typing in the exact title, and a robot autocompletes your request. Then, proudly suggests 47 other movies you didn’t ask for because they don’t actually have the movie you really want.

Now I’ve “bought” hundreds of movies on Amazon. So, why am I watching commercials before and after a movie I already paid for? Especially, after I already paid $140 for access with my Prime membership.

That’s not ownership. That’s paying admission to my own living room.

They say you’re buying the movie, but what you’re really doing is renting it — indefinitely — until they lose the rights to carry it..

Then, just like that… poof…it disappears, like socks in a dryer. No warning. No refund. Just gone. Imagine buying a DVD and one day it just evaporates off your shelf.

And don’t even get me started on buying the same movie five times.

Oh, you already own it? Great! Would you like to buy it again? This time it’s the 25th anniversary edition or the extended edition or the director’s cut of the extended anniversary edition. New cover. Same movie.

You’d think a tech giant could figure out what’s already in my library. But, apparently, that technology is still under development.

Then the movie ends, but before the credits can even roll, the screen shrinks, the music cuts off, and they start shoving commercials or previews in your face like a carnival barker.

Slow down! Maybe I want to see who was in the movie without pulling out my phone and checking IMDb like a detective.

And they wonder why people miss physical media. At least with a DVD, you owned it and it remained yours.

I’m Grandpa Grumpy. Movies were a lot better when you just watched them on the big screen.
